What: Film Review Directed by: Bryan Ortiz Written by: James Hartz, Bryan Ortiz, Evan Boston Produced by: Michael Druck, Bryan Ortiz Starring: Rick Carrillo, Alicia Shaddeau, Billy Jaeger, Reuel Meditz Running Time (in minutes): 79 mins. Language: English Rated: R Rated by: Megan Brown
No, seriously, marijuana doesn’t just give people the munchies. It turns them into lustful, insane cannibals. At least it does in Bryan Ortiz’s, “Dr. S Battles the Sex Crazed Reefer Zombies”, which is being shown as part of the 7th annual Another Hole In The Head Film Festival. Drug-free, girl next door Mary Jane (Alicia Shaddeau) watches her reefer-smoking boyfriend morph into a zombie and she is left defenseless on the outskirts of town. That is until anti-hero scientist Dr. S (Rick Carrillo) comes to the rescue. Everyone in the city is well on their way to becoming “infected” if they aren’t already, and the government is partly to blame for this “Red Menace” antidote...

What: Film Review Directed by: Agnes Jaoui Written by: Agnes Jaoui, Jean-Pierre Bacri Starring: Agnes Jaoui, Jean-Pierre Bacri, Jamel Debbouze, Pascale Arbillot, Guillaume de Tonquedec Running Time (in minutes): 99 mins. Language: French (w/English subtitles) Rated: Not Rated Rated by: Bonnie Steiger
They say you can never go home again, but in "Let It Rain", Agnes Jaoui (director, co-writer, star) tries. She plays Agathe, a successful feminist writer on the threshold of a political career who goes back to her home village to stump for an election. Not only does she have to deal with her sister, who irrefutably bemoans ‘mother loved you more,’ but also the bumbling documentarian (played by co-writer Jean-Pierre Bacri) who wants to investigate the phenomenon of a ‘successful woman.’ It doesn’t help that she takes an hour out of her busy schedule to answer his often barbed and biased questions only to find he hasn’t turned on the camera. At the same time,...

What: Film Review Directed by: Jaume Balagueró, Paco Plaza Written by: Jaume Balagueró, Manu Díez, Paco Plaza Produced by: Julio Fernandez Starring: Jonathan Mellor, Manuela Velasco, Ariel Casas Running Time (in minutes): 85 mins. Language: Spanish (w/English subtitles) Rated: R Rated by: Rachael Lipsetts
"Quick and easy," the SWAT assures themselves as they enter the zombie-infested apartment building, hoping that their mission will be just that. However, when the team enters the building, eerily quiet and calm, we know their mission is going to anything but. [REC] 2 picks up moments after the original ends and the panic doesn't stop until the final empty, zombie-eyed glare into the fallen camera. [REC] 2 borrows heavily from The Exorcist in that it is centralized around religious possession: a little girl has a demonic infection that spreads rapidly through an apartment building in Barcelona, Spain, leaving its victims deranged and blood-thirsty. A priest is sent in to try to contain the damage. The police enter as well, thinking they can combat the...

What: Film Review Directed by: Christopher Nolan Written by: Christopher Nolan Produced by: Emma Thomas, Christoper Nolan Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Ken Watanabe, Marion Cotilliard Running Time (in minutes): 148 mins. Language: English Rated: PG-13 Rated by: Kevin Robinson
Great cast, great crew, and more than one great idea. So then, I have to ask myself "Why is Christopher Nolan's "Inception" not a great film?" To be honest, it's not even a good film. And at almost 2 !/2 hours, it starts to drag. I have to say that I was really looking forward to seeing this offering from writer/director/producer Nolan (with Emma Thomas), he of "Memento", "The Prestige" and of course " The Dark Knight" fame. But "Inception" tries to be a sci-fi, action adventure, heist film, and maybe that's the problem. There are too many things juggled about, too many questions in plot and not many answers. Unfortunately this is where "Inception"...

What: Film Review Directed by: Nimrod Antal Written by: Alex Litvak & Michael Finch Produced by: Elizabeth Avellan, John Davis, Robert Rodriguez Starring: Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Laurence Fishburne, Danny Trejo Running Time (in minutes): 107 mins Language: English Rated: R Rated by: Roberto L. Lazarte
Dear Nimród Antal, Thank you for directing this film and for rescuing the saga. Honestly, I lost any hope on both Aliens and Predators after the AVPs but you and producer Robert Rodriguez really brought together the elements that made Predators a success the first time. It was suspenseful and action packed with images that evoked piercing sensations. The obvious touch of Rodriguez visceral goriness was presented with tastefulness. Kudos to you too tocayo. There was doubt that the concept could be successfully exploited again, but you guys gave it an unexpected and modern retro spin, gloriously putting the cruelest alien of the Sci-Fi genre back on the big screen. Instead of following the...
